Functional Nutrition

"Food is medicine" is a popular philosophy for a reason. What you eat has a truly massive impact on how you feel, act, and show up in the world, and it can shape the way your body copes with disease and imbalance. It is one component of what should be a multifaceted approach to optimizing physical and emotional well being.

Friends Around Table

Mindful eating

We talk so much about WHAT to eat, but ever thought of the equally important HOW to eat? Sitting down to eat, not multi-tasking while having a meal, taking a breath before the first bite, chewing well throughout the meal, eating in pleasant company.

Glasses of Water

Water

Water (lots of it) and maybe unsweetened coffee or tea is where it's at. Don't drink your daily calories.

Fruits and Vegetables

Whole, seasonal foods

Whole foods are your friend. They let you know what you put in your mouth and give your body what it needs to work optimally. And if you decide to eat seasonally/locally on top, you can be sure to eat a variety of different, nutrient-dense foods.

Grilled Meat

Protein

Protein first seems to be a good advice. It typically has plenty of nutrients and it keeps you full longer. Win-win.

Marinated Olives

Fat

Fat is so important for the body and especially for the brain. Don't shy away from eating it, just make sure to avoid the highly processed trans fats and seed and vegetable oils. Olive or avocado oil is generally a great choice for pretty much everything.

Colorful Fruits

Carbs

Carbs are NOT your enemy! Quite the opposite in fact. They provide your body with very much needed energy. Just make sure to focus on the "good" kinds (naturally occuring ones like differnt fruits, for example, since they typically come with plenty of fiber too), steer clear of the added and artifically made ones, and ideally always pair them with some of the other makros to slow down their effect on your blood sugar.
